Windhoek to Kimberley

Selfdrive /10 Days 

Highlights: Experience Namibia. Visit the city of Windhoek and explore the German colonial past in the seaside town Luederitz. See the Namib-Naukluft Park, visit the famous Sossousvlei dunes and view the renowned Fish River Canyon. Afterwards you enter the rainbow nation South Africa. Admire the impressive Augrabies Waterfalls and explore the Northern Cape Province, with its special cities of Upington and Kimberley.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek (approx. 60 km)

Arrival in Windhoek. Explore the city from your vehicle. If you are interested, visit the National Museum of Namibia and explore the natural history & local traditional cultural practices and Namibia’s colonial and more recent history. Afterwards you are free to explore Windhoek on your own.

Day 2: Windhoek – Sossusvlei (420 km)

Explore the Namib Desert and Namib-Naukluft Park. First destination is the 2-4 million year old Sesriem Canyon. After this breathtaking site, the next attraction is Sossusvlei. Hike up on magnificent red sand dunes, see picturesque camel thorn trees and the view the vlei (shallow water pond). Enjoy sunset at the dunes and use the opportunity to take amazing pictures.

Day 3: Sossusvlei – Aus (360 km)

After an early visit to the dunes for special sunrise images you will be travelling South, along the Namib-Naukluft Park. Enjoy the landscape and the quite drive without much traffic. There is chances that you will see the wild horses of Namibia grazing near Aus.

Day 4: Luederitz (250 km)

Today you will enjoy a day outing to the city of Luederitz. On your way you will pass the ghost town of Kolmanskop. Luederitz gained importance due to Diamonds found in 1908. After the diamonds were mined, the town went back to previous state.

Drive through this quaint town and experience the tranquillity and beauty of the Grosse Bucht and Agate Beach. Learn about the town’s history at Goerke Haus and the Luderitz Museum. On your return you will pass Garub, where there is a legendary group of Namibian wild horses.

Day 5: Aus – Fish River Canyon (300 km)

Continue today from Aus to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world!  Enjoy the spectacular views and the explore forces of nature. Ideal for impressive pictures.

Day 6: Fish River Canyon – Upington (350 km)

Today you are leaving the Fish River Canyon in Namibia and enter South Africa. Your journey takes you to Upington. See the beauty of the Orange River that starts in Namibia. Enjoy a leisure walk through Upington. If you are interested, you can visit the Upington Museum and the South African Dried Fruit Co-Operative.

Day 7: Augrabies Falls 

Enjoy a Day tour to Augrabies National Park. Augrabies, which means the place of great noise, is the sixth largest waterfall in the world. Explore the most exquisite viewings of the Augrabies Falls and enjoy a walk in the area. If there is time and you are interested, enjoy a visit to the Riemvasmaak Hot Springs.

Day 8: Upington – Kimberley (425 km)

Enjoy a relaxed drive to Kimberley. After a short introductory city sightseeing tour continue to the Savoy Hotel in the centre of town. Afterwards you can explore the city at leisure.

Day 9: Kimberley

See the amazing Big Hole & Diamond Mine Museum in Kimberley. The Big Hole is so large that it is visible from space. This Mine has yielded some of the world’s largest diamonds. You will see a short inspirational movie of the location and history of the mine, go on a platform to view the hole, take a walk down a faux mining shaft, view displays on the making of diamonds and enter a locked vault to view genuine diamonds of all colours.

In the afternoon you can explore Belgravia, one of the historic parts of Kimberley in a leisure guided walk. Choose one of the nearby Restaurants if you feel hungry.

Day 10: Departure
